Nick Danziger is British. Born in London, he grew up between Monaco — where he still lives — and Switzerland.
He is a photographer, but also a documentary filmmaker and travel writer, and his work has always sat at the meeting point of the three.
His first major distinction came early: a Churchill Fellowship in 1982, at twenty-four, for an ambitious journey along the Silk Road. Eighteen months from Turkey to China, travelling in disguise as a local labourer — a crossing that would become the book Danziger’s Travels and establish his method: go slowly, stay long, and be present rather than passing through.
The bulk of his work concerns people living in difficult circumstances around the world, and young people in particular. He has photographed in Afghanistan, across the Middle East and in Britain’s own margins, returning again and again to the same subjects over years — long enough to show what actually becomes of a life.
Nick belongs to the old school. In the digital age, he still shoots black-and-white film exclusively, working with vintage lenses and equipment long past its prime.
Outdated as that may sound, it is precisely what allows him to get closer to his subject and to immerse himself completely — never distracted by checking the screen on the back of the camera to review what he has already shot. He won’t see those frames until much later, sometimes months on.
His work appears regularly in international magazines and has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. He has been a member of the Royal Photographic Society since 2007.
