Jean-Christian Biville

France

Bio

When he was young, Jean-Christian studied at photography school and specialised in industrial photography. He was also a good enough cyclist to turn professional. He did this for five years from 1965 to 1970, at the service of Raymond Poulidor with the Mercier team, then Joachim Agostinho under Jean De Gribaldi’s orders. He retired when he fractured his femur.

A few years later, Jean-Marie Leblanc, who was responsible for the cycling column at L’Equipe, and who had been friends with Jean-Christian since the days when they were both professional cyclists, hired him as a chaffeur to drive journalists during races. Jean-Christian also went back to his first qualification, and shot some photos of all the races he went to. He had a career as chauffeur-photographer for thirty years for L’Equipe. His great driving, as well as his race sense, allowed him to sense things before others and take journalists to the heart of the action. His special relationship with the world of cycling, dating back to his professional days, opened every door, even the most airtight, and allowed journalists special access to information, as well as allowing him to take photos.

He is now retired and living happily in Luzarches to the north of Paris, and keeps fit by walking 10 kilometres a day alone in the forest.
